Side Note: How to Enable DevTools in Discord

I currently have a ticket open with Discord and they required me to get the Build Number for the client that I was using.
Of course, this information would mainly be in the ‘User Settings’ at the bottom but they wanted the [BUILD INFO] more specifically

But when I attempted to do ⌘⌥+i on my Mac, it didn’t appear. Checking to ensure that I did it right, focused on the window and nothing, still wouldn’t work.

It turns out that on the Stable client for Discord, they disabled it to prevent any account compromises.

To enable it, carry out the following:

    • Quit Discord (Either via ‘Discord’ >> Quit, or pressing ⌘+Q)
    • Navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/discord/
    • Open settings.json in TextEdit or your favourite text editor.
    • Above the } at the bottom of the file, add "DANGEROUS_ENABLE_DEVTOOLS_ONLY_ENABLE_IF_YOU_KNOW_WHAT_YOURE_DOING": true
    • Save it.
    • Reopen Discord.

Now, you can open DevTools on Discord on macOS.

And since there will be someone looking to do this on Windows:

    • Quit Discord.
    • Win+R to open run.
    • Type: %appdata%/discord/ and press enter
    • Open the settings.json in Notepad your favourite text editor
    • Above the } at the bottom of the file, add "DANGEROUS_ENABLE_DEVTOOLS_ONLY_ENABLE_IF_YOU_KNOW_WHAT_YOURE_DOING": true
    • Save it.
    • Reopen Discord.

    And the Linux users

    • Quit Discord.
    • Navigate to /.config/discord/ either via the terminal or through your File Manager. [It may also be at ~/.discord if it’s not in the aforementioned location.]
    • Open the settings.json in your favourite text editor.
    • Above the } at the bottom of the file, add "DANGEROUS_ENABLE_DEVTOOLS_ONLY_ENABLE_IF_YOU_KNOW_WHAT_YOURE_DOING": true
    • Save it.
    • Reopen Discord.

[The JukeBox] #89 – Richard Jacques -Can You Feel The Sunshine (Sonic R)

Sonic R has gone down as one of the very few games where the score is better than the game itself.

Released back in 1997, Sonic R was Sega’s third racing game in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise after Sonic Drift’s 1994 Japan-only release with Sonic Drift Racing being released internationally 13 months after.

This would also be the first 3D Sonic Game, second overall after Sonic 3D Blast.

The game received mixed reviews with GameSpot giving it 5.6 out of 10. CVG however gave it a 4 out of 5.

After the release of the game in 1997, Sega would not release another Sonic racing game until 2006 with the release of Sonic Riders. These days, Sega released Team Sonic Racing back in 2019.

The song ‘Can You Feel The Sunshine’ is one of the first tracks that you hear once you get into a race. Performed by British singer TJ Davis, the song has become gained a resurgence with many older Sonic fans rediscovering a timeless classic.

    Lyrics:

Can you see? The sun is shinin’ on me
It makes me feel so free, so alive
It makes me want to survive

And the sky, it makes me feel so high
The bad times pass me by
‘Cause today is gonna be a brighter day

    Can you feel the sunshine?
Does it brighten up your day?
    Don’t you feel that sometimes
You just need to run away?
    Reach out for the sunshine
    Forget about the rain
Just think about the good times
And they will come back again
    Feel the sunshine…

Without you, there’s nothing for me to do
Can you feel the sunshine, too?
It’s comin’ through; it makes me feel brand new

When you’re here, I wish you were always near
    ‘Cause everything’s so clear
And today is gonna be a brighter day

    Can you feel the sunshine?
Does it brighten up your day?
    Don’t you feel that sometimes
You just need to run away?
    Reach out for the sunshine
    Forget about the rain
Just think about the good times
And they will come back again

    When the sun goes down
I feel like I am waiting
    For another day
    When the clouds go away

    Can you feel it?
    Ooh-hoo…
    Can you feel it?
    Oh…

    Can you feel it?
    Oh…
    Can you feel it?

    Can you feel the sunshine?
Does it brighten up your day?
    Brighten up your day…
    Don’t you feel that sometimes
We just need to run away?
    Reach out for the sunshine
    Forget about the rain
Just think about the good times
And they will come back again

    Can you feel the sunshine?
Does it brighten up your day?
    Brighten up your day…
    Don’t you feel that sometimes
You just need to run away?
You just need to run away…
    Reach out for the sunshine
    Forget about the rain
Just think about the good times
And they will come back again

    Can you feel the sunshine?
    Can you feel it?
Does it brighten up your day?
    Brighten up your day…
    Don’t you feel that sometimes
We just need to run away?
    Need to run away…
    Reach out for the sunshine

  • Microtransactions, Loot boxes should be curbed by the government.

Microtransactions, Loot boxes should be curbed by the government.

This week, Blizzard Activision released a brand new mobile-first ARPG in their infamous Diablo series titled: Diablo Immortal and it already had it criticisms right out of the gate.

When the game was announced at BlizzCon 2018, it was met with boos as most of the attendees of BlizzCon were players of World Of Warcraft, Diablo III, Heartstone, StarCraft and were hoping for the announcement of Diablo IV.

When met with the boos, the Principal Game Designer, Wyatt Cheng questioned the audience with a simple question “Do you guys not have phones?”

It wasn’t a question as to whether players had a phone but more-so, whether they would play a video game with such a highly renowned franchise like Diablo on a mobile device. The first ‘red flag’ of this was the developer of the game, Netease, which didn’t improve the confidence in consumers.

As a response to this, Blizzard announced Diablo IV, the next proper game in the franchise at their BlizzCon 2019 event.

Netease are a Chinese game developer which sparked a lot of worry for people as Netease would have to (by law) hand over information about the users that play Diablo Immortal to the Chinese Government. That is never good.

Fast forward to June 1st and the game releases on Mobile and now people can get the first look at the game.

In the time that I have spent with the game, I have found it to be enjoyable and have spent about 3 – 4 hours on it.

While some of the paid content has been pushed in my face. Early beta users and even eagle eyed users of the released full game have got their excel sheets out and figured out that if you want the BEST gear and loot in the game to be the best in PlayerVsPlayer content, then you would need to spend at the very least $110,000!

In a video by Northern Irish YouTuber Bellular, if you were to not give Blizzard/Netease any money and you wanted to get everything for free, you would need to play the game for up to and possibly even more than a decade!

Most of the games content including gear and literal progression in the game is bound by loot boxes. This has already become a major problem with other games such as EA Sport’s FIFA and Activision Blizzard’s Overwatch.

With the likes of Overwatch, they do allow you to unlock items which is locked behind loot boxes quite easily. If you open other loot boxes and you get duplicates, it is converted into coins which can be used against locked content. You cannot purchase the coins from Blizzard. Only the loot boxes themselves. You get a free loot box, every time you level up or during a seasonal event.

Games that do contain loot boxes are banned in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Daniel Hurley BL, a Parliamentary Researcher in Law for Oireachtas Library & Research Service wrote a ‘Spotlight’ in February of 2020 detailing what could be done to regulate loot boxes and micro-transactions in Ireland with most important question being “Whether loot boxes are a form of gambling”

In November of 2020, Cian O’Callaghan TD (SD – Dublin North Bay) asked the Minister of Justice, Helen McEntee the following:

(for her) views on the prevalence of loot box gambling mechanics implemented in video gaming; her plans to implement protections for children against these practices; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The minister responded with the following:

There is no current legislation with regard to online video gaming engaged in by individuals. However, I am aware that there has been some attention on issues arising in the context of video gaming. In particular, whether in-game purchases or micro-transactions, described as “loot boxes”, “skins” etc., designed to improve the players’ chances of success in inter-active online games, might encourage gambling like behaviour.

The issue is whether such micro-transactions constitute gambling or are a form of e-commerce.  It is not clear that these offers fall within the current Irish legal definition of gambling or that purchases are essentially an e-commerce activity.

Different approaches have been adopted to the issue of whether and how “loot boxes” might be defined and regulated in the context of gambling activities in Europe, with no definitive outcomes. This matter is one which my Department and ultimately the new Gambling Regulator will keep under review.

This is a position, which is shared by other EU Member States. Ireland supported the 2018 Declaration by the Gaming Regulators European Forum that video gaming products should be licensed and regulated appropriately, if they can be shown to fall into the category of gambling. In preparing the declaration, member states were aware of reports that third party actors, not authorised by the video game developer or under their control, may seek to commercialise certain elements of video gaming in a manner akin to gambling.

With regard to protection of children and age limits for video games, the Pan-European Game Information (PEGI) age rating system was established in 2003 to help European parents make informed decisions on buying computer games. It replaced a number of national age rating systems with a single system now used throughout most of Europe, in more than 35 countries including Ireland. However, ‘gambling’, for the purposes of PEGI video game rating, is based on whether there are depictions of gambling in the game that can be found in real life, e.g. casino type games. It is not clear that PEGI (which is a voluntary code of the industry, rather than state mandated) could or would put such gambling related warnings on games containing Loot Boxes as these are discretionary purchases by the player. I encourage parents to ensure that their children only engage in appropriate gaming and are not making purchases unknown to them.

While it may seem like, this is at the very early stage, it is good to see that they are ‘aware’ of it and hopefully the new Gambling Regulator will be able to curb the aggressiveness of Loot boxes and microtransactions in video games, especially games being developed in Asian countries.

Other than a ban, developers/publishers should be able to try to do the following which would would be considered fair for the public.

    • Very low cost for purchasable items from the cash shop.
    • Allow only one or two currencies in the game. (Diablo: Immortal has 6!!!)
    • The ability to purchase items from the cash stop via in-game methods (without having to play for decades)
    • Do not have ANYTHING purchasable from the store which can affect gear level. Purely cosmetic items. (Items like a “Double XP boost for 1 hour” should still be allowed, but limited to ‘X’ amount per character or account.)

There needs to be a justification to have these egregious loot box systems because as most games are targeted at the young demographic (8 – 13 yo), it’s going to onset an early form of gambling and could affect them in the future.

Plus, parents should be made well aware by game developers (or even by staff in video game stores) contain paid content such as loot boxes. Older parents, grandparents and more should be made aware of the dangers of loot boxes.

  • Regarding Third Party Tools in FFXIV

Regarding Third Party Tools in FFXIV

On Monday, Square Enix released a post on the Lodestone addressing third party plugins/addons/mods, etc in Final Fantasy XIV.

In their post, they details that all third party tools are against the Terms of Service, which is not new but has been reiterated to players over the last few years but more so within the last 6 months.

Up until now, the ‘ruling’ from Naoki Yoshida (Director and Producer of Final Fantasy XIV) was that you can use them, as long as you are not being toxic or harassing other players and using it for your own benefit.

What these plugins/tools/addons/mods do is enhance the gameplay of Final Fantasy XIV, mostly using Quality of Life (QoL) enhancements, like a different UI, bigger numbers, alerts, etc. The scope of this is endless, but it has come at a cost.

It has been revealed that certain players were able to get to the last phase of the Dragonsong’s Reprise (Ultimate) map earlier than it was supposed to be intended. It, along with the weapon rewards from that fight were datamined and leaked online weeks before it was available to players.

In addition, the community believes that certain groups that did not livestream the progression of the Dragonsong’s Reprise (Ultimate) World First Race (Which is an unofficial race that is held by the community to see who can complete the raid the fastest), which gets a mere nod from Square Enix at the end, believe that they were using third party tools to either: Complete the fight quicker, practise on a different server, skip mechanics due to plugins/addons/tools.

This has let to certain streamers both in North America and Japan receiving 10-day bans from Final Fantasy XIV for streaming on Twitch with Advanced Combat Tracker (ACT) being displayed. Neither player was cheating nor being toxic towards anyone else. It turned out that streamers on 4Chan and Japan’s 5Ch has been involving themselves in report brigading and were causing these streamers to get banned.

Now, everyone (Including myself 😛 ) have a opinion on what Square Enix should and shouldn’t do.

Here is my take on it:

Square Enix can obviously make the rules that they want to set out. They are imposed to protect not only the players, but Square Enix legally.

Could the rules be changed? Yes. It can be. But Square Enix won’t because it is not an issue on their side but it would be on the mod authors side to make the change.

Where there should be rules is with the guys like Dalamud or XIVAlexander and other tools.

Dalamud had already released a statement where Patch 6.1 was released about plugins for PvP

This is the right way to go about it. Mod authors can stop anything going through their official repositories but unable to very 3rd party repositories which is all they can do.

The likes of Cactpot (which displays callouts for raids), should look about adding a delay to the release of some World First races fights (Savages, Ultimates) for the first week or two or until most of the World First teams have cleared the fight.

Streamers should be allowed to display ACT as before but again, they can’t be toxic about it. The report brigading from 4/5chan should end within the next week or two when the dust settles but I just hope that Square Enix doesn’t make any further changes to the ruling or the Terms of Service to change this.

Hopefully the community can get their act together and stop throwing their toys out of their pram when it comes to the world first race. Just because you and your group were not the first to kill DSR, doesn’t mean that you throw abuse to others.

    Be kind.

[The Jukebox] #73 – Takeharu Ishimoto – Twister

In a much simpler time, 2007, Square-Enix released a new IP on the Nintendo DS, called The World Ends With You (TWEWY). An RPG utilising the DS’ bottom touch screen to move your character and using badges to unleash attacks such as fire, ice and other elements.

The game was set in Tokyo’s suburb Shibuya, and while most of the landmarks were duplicated into the video game, some names of businesses being modified, like the infamous department store 109 becoming “104” and Starbucks becoming “Outback Cafe”.

In the 2021 sequel, NEO: TWEWY, the game is once again set in Shibuya and this time it kept the names of Tower Records and Parco in the game. 104 and Outback retain their names from the first game.

(Sidenote: While they share the names, Tower Records in Japan and Tower Records in Ireland operate independently from each other, but it would be so so SO nice if I could get some Japanese only music in the Irish stores. They have some Anime movies (Mainly Studio Ghibli titles) but it would be cool to get some pop/dance/OST)

Twister while not the main theme, became synonymous with the franchise as it has been remixed many many times (25 times in fact) for battles, boss battles and final battles for the iOS Release, the Final Mix release, NEO: TWEWY release and the anime intro!

  • New World

    New World

Back on Tuesday, Amazon Games launched its new MMO, New World to the public.

The game was met with a lot of negative reviews on social media and even a review-bomb on Steam (Which seems to be fixing itself at time of writing) due to the server capacity and lack of servers in general.

Amazon did address this by adding well over 100+ servers for the game. A updating thread on their forum shows that they are working on adding new servers.

I was very reluctant in getting New World. I thought there was glaring issues with the combat and questing and a sense of questioning as to what is to be done at End Game.

I even tweeted out that I was going to give it a miss for a ‘year or two’

Try, a day or two. This evening, I bought New World. 😅

I started a character this evening on one of the newest EU servers, Ursa Dry Tree (Server merged back in February 2022).

My character, Crakila, on Ursa server in New World

I don’t know how much of this game I am going to play considering that my main game, Final Fantasy XIV, has it’s expansion releasing this November, so New World is filling that void in the meantime.

I will not be giving a detailed review of the game, but I figure an update as to how I get on and how I enjoy the game, may come in the future.
