Every post that has something got to do with technology…whether it’s to do with computers, phone, the internet. It’ll be posted here

  • So I bought a Tablet yesterday

I writing this on the tablet through the WordPress App

Last week, there was a ad on  TV for the HP Slate 7. It was £140 I think, so I looked on Pc World’s website for the euro price. It was €160.

After a while, I decided to check out the Xtra vision and Carphone Warehouse site where they were selling the Google Nexus 7. While it did seem good for the price (and yes, I was intending to get it), Neither Carphone nor Xtra Vision had it in stock.

  • A look at the old and new Google+

Today, Google rolled out a new look Google+ after the announcement at Google I/O 2013.

I managed to get a screenshot of the old and the new one (The old one was taken on the computer, while the new one was taken on the laptop.)

    Old:

    New:

    UPDATE:
My monitor is a big monitor, and I just seen this. This looks like Facebook theatre mode but a lot nicer. On a smaller browser size (1366×768), the comment box goes back to the bottom. This was a nice change. Also, that nav bar at the top is very nice.

I for one love the new layout of Google+ and I will be using it more in the coming days, weeks and months to come.

If you haven’t ‘circled’ me on Google+, head on over to my Google+ page now 🙂

  • Computer Issues (2nd May 2013)

You may recall about 3 weeks ago, I made a post about my Desktop having issues.

Luckily this time, it isn’t my desktop, but rather my 3-month old Toshiba laptop!

    rage-crazy-rage

It began at about 11am on Thursday 2nd May. I was about to go for my Tea-Break at work and I always lock the computer (WinKey+L), and the screen went blank. Side note: The computer was working perfectly before this happened. No lock screen came up. I thought nothing of it and just went for my tea-break.

Came back and it was still a black screen. I couldn’t login or anything so, I turned off the laptop using the power button. When I pressed that button again to turn it on. Shit hit the fan!

  • Computer Issues (12th April 2013)

UPDATE: I have fixed the issue. I have reinstalled Windows 8. I am going to bed now.

Good evening folks. I hope you are keeping well.

I am having computer issues this evening! My USB’s are refusing to work in Windows 8!

(Just saying this now, don’t bash Windows 8 because of ‘Metro’,’ Modern UI’ or similar. I am not here to hear your bitching about it. I am here looking for help and nothing more. I am not being a fanboy here, but if I see comments which is not related to helping me, they will be removed!)

When I boot my computer, I get presented with grub (Linux bootloader) because I have both Windows 8 and Linux Mint 14 installed. I doubt it is Linux that is causing this issue, because I have hardly been using Linux since I installed it (To be honest, I haven’t found the time to be using it.)

Anyway, I have set by default to boot to Windows 8 and that is all grand and dandy!

The Windows 8 lock screen appears. I press the Space Bar on my keyboard to ‘swipe’ the lock screen away so I can enter my password. Nope. Won’t do that! Mouse? Nope!

I check the lights on the Razer BlackWidow Keyboard (No hating please) and the light is on to detect that the keyboard is working. NOTE: I could use my keyboard in the grub menu to change from Windows to Linux Mint. And I am currently writing this post in Linux Mint, so obviously there is nothing wrong with the keyboard or mouse.

I have disconnected all the USB’s from the back of the computer and put them all back in, with the same results.

I thought, “How about Remote Desktop?” Nope! I use a USB Wireless Dongle to connect to the internet and I also have PCI Wireless card but I can’t choose that card, since I can only have one card selected at a time.

I can’t do System Restore because Windows wants me to reboot into Windows 8 to do it!

    PS2 Keyboard = Nope

AAGH! I honestly have no idea how to get around it. If anyone has any ideas or methods that I could try to rectify this situation, then please comment below.

    Thank you 🙂

  • “Codename Lungo” to “Avatar ROM”

(OH shi-, a technology related post)

A couple of weeks ago, I decided to jump ship from the Cyanogenmod 9 install on my Samsung  Galaxy S II to try out Jelly Bean. I looked around XDA-Developers looking for a decent ROM that I could install and try out.

I found one called “Codename Lungo” and for the most part, I enjoyed it. It was a plain Jelly Bean install and there wasn’t anything fancy about it, that is what I was looking for. So, I spent the best part of a afternoon installing all the apps that I had previously used on the CM9 install. After about a hour or grabbing apps and configuring them, I noticed something strange.

    “System Storage Space running low..”

WHAT?! This fresh install of Codename Lungo that I just installed, says that my phone memory is running low. But the thing is, I wiped the ENTIRE phone before installing Codename Lungo.

I thought at first it was just a fluke, so I turned the phone off and on again and yet it still happened. Then over the next few days and up to last Saturday, I couldn’t get any emails on my phone and i couldn’t update any apps….it just wasn’t happening.

So, where am I going now? Well, I am downloading Avatar ROM from XDA-Developers and I am going to do ANOTHER full complete wipe and I will make sure that the only thing that is on my device before I install is the ROM and the Gapps .zip that I need to install.

I will probably make another post with the results that I find either later today or later this week.

What ROM are you running on your device? A custom or a Stock ROM? If you are running a custom ROM, which one is it and link to it in the comments.

UPDATE: I have installed Avatar ROM and have downloaded all the apps that I needed and I am only using 589MB~ out of the 2GB. So there WAS a problem with Codename Lungo all along. Ah well, at least I can use my phone again the way it should be. 😀

  • Irish Sky Broadband & Why Irish Internet Still Sucks ASS

Today (7th February 2013), Sky announced the launch of it’s Irish version of their Broadband.

Just like every other ISP in the country. Buying off Eircom/UPC and reselling it. That’s the way it has been for the longest time.

Sky are trying to give us what we can get on the line (They claim ‘up to 24Mbs’). I thought “Brilliant. Now I can get REAL speeds and actually use what’s on the line”.

So, I went ahead and tested the line with their “tool” and found out that I can receive a reasonable 14.4Mbs. That’s about 2x MORE than what I have been getting from Eircom and Vodafone for the past couple of years!.

Eircom and Vodafone always says ‘Up to 8Mbs’ because of what’s on the line.

Now, I know that regulations are in place for Reason X, Y and Z but COME ON! There is 14Mbs available on that line and all you can do is provide 8!

Why not either do 1 of 2 things:
    1) Give us at least 10MBS guaranteed with the other 4MBS being used for Upload! (Hah, like that will ever happen)
    2) 8MBS download (like what has been given to us), but with more upload speed. I can’t believe that we are hungry for upload. Not to upload illegal content or anything (I don’t upload illegal content at all…), but for syncing services like DropBox, SkyDrive, Google Drive, Mega. ANYTHING!

(Gahh, I have started ranting about upload speeds……..here we go)

I live with my parents and there is 2 “main” users of the internet on a daily basis. Myself and my father.

My dad does internet stuff and some college work, so he uses DropBox to backup everything and to easily submit assignments and that to his tutors. All well and good. Oh and he uses Skype too! So what happens, when he is browsing Facebook, Syncing documents on DropBox and using Skype at the same time…No bandwidth for Padraig.

Now, I am the power user in the family (Surprise Surprise) and I use services like Steam, Origin, Razer Synapse (for the Keyboard), Outlook and other tools that use bandwidth. And I also love playing games.

Let me take a example shall we. I was playing Team Fortress 2 one night and I was happy as a pig in shite. While playing away, I notice my ping jumps from 60ms~ to about 600ms~ and me jumping around the place like a headless chicken.

When I took my headset off to go and reset the router, I could hear my dad in the next room talking to Skype, so I had to disconnect from the game and went to talk with friends on TeamSpeak. NOPE! That wasn’t going to happen. Because there wasn’t enough of bandwidth on the connection to output to the internet, everything lagged and then the network crapped itself.

So, where and I getting at here! Irish broadband NEEDS more upload to accompany more than one service. 0.5Mbs is NOT going to cut it anymore. We have moved on from the days of IRC as a main way of communication. We are now using Smartphones, laptops, computers, tablets that all use the internet for outputting information and we just don’t have the upload bandwidth to keep everything working.

Sky, is not going to be doing anything different. FTTC is probably (but not) going to solve this. I don’t think the whole FTTC is actually going to work. Our infrastructure is so messed up, that it will be 2030 before we will get faster internet!

Will this blog post change anything that happens with our broadband? Of course it won’t. ISP’s don’t listen to the “hardcore” users and don’t give 2 monkeys about what we think. All they care about is that they get money so they can provide the shittest internet in all of Europe.

TL;DR – Irish Internet Sucks and always will be and no ISP can ever change that! Nothing has been done before about it and it looks like nothing is going to be done about it now.
